Covid-19 Updates
November 18, 2020
Dear Family,
It’s deja vu all over again. I want to share with you my head and my heart.
Let’s start with my head...
This week El Dorado County was moved into the most restrictive tier for COVID-19 prevention. Although EDC leaders had petitioned that we stay in the orange tier, the sudden increase of positive test results has put us in the same place as 40 other counties across California. As well there is now a face mask mandate for the state. On Tuesday, November 17th EDC had 97 positive cases out of 353 people tested. If there is any silver lining on this dark cloud it is that hospitalizations and deaths are still minimal. However, as a school administrator friend said to me - “...it is here and it is going to get worse.”
The California State guidelines for Purple Tier in regards to Places of Worship mandate no indoor services. After conversations with the Leadership Board and ministry leaders we have determined the best course of action at this time is to scale back to one service at 10:45AM on Sundays that will be held outdoors on the back patio. These will be family services where Kidsworld will provide resources for kids and parents to be engaged. We want to continue having public services so I am strongly encouraging us all to follow the best practices of face coverings, social distancing and handwashing. We will always have our online service available on demand starting at 9:00AM each Sunday.
This dynamic situation is being monitored daily and we are making decisions that seek both safety and engagement with each other and Jesus through fellowship, teaching and worship. Our goal is to always move us to a greater in-person, face-to-face, shoulder-to-shoulder community. One of the most powerful expressions of this is through our Life Groups - small groups that meet together virtually and in people’s homes. If you are not in a Life Group but want to explore how to get connected this way, please email us at info@coldspringschurch.net. Also, this is the time to rise up and care for each other. If someone comes to mind, take that as the prompting of the Holy Spirit to call, text, email, pray and connect with that person to encourage them.
Now let me share with you my heart…
As we enter the holiday season of Thanksgiving and Christmas with the hope of a better tomorrow but the shadow of COVID and a divisive political environment looming over us, my mind goes to these words of Jesus:
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”” (Matthew 11:28–30, NLT)
Life for many has indeed been filled with weariness. Yes, politics and pandemics have contributed to this greatly but have you noticed that life still “happens”? I know families who are facing economic pressures and family members who are dying of cancer and COVID-19; moms and dads who are stretched to their limits transporting and educating their kids; teachers and administrators who are daily dealing with changing rules and expectations about how to do their jobs; marriages that are fraying at the edges; parents crushed over choices their kids are making; business owners who are wondering how to survive...I could go on, but you get the point.
Weariness.
I get it. I’m there with you, my friends. To be honest, the pressures of the past month between ministry and parenting have threatened to crush me. The opportunity I had for a short break in the mountains of Idaho, instead turned into the chance for the breath of hell to visit my family back at home. That may sound dramatic but, believe me, I am not exaggerating. Details aside, I fought one of the most intense spiritual battles I’ve ever experienced involving my family and continue to do so. Prior to that my shoulder surgery in July and Pam breaking her leg in August; in addition my deep concern and care for the hurts and needs of you, the people of Cold Springs Church, and our great ministry team leaders weighs heavily upon my heart. I feel your weariness.
“...and I will give you rest.”
What bridges the gap between weariness and rest? One small, important word: come. Jesus tells us to come to him in our weariness, in the crushing load of our burdens; there is a reward of rest found in that movement. Jesus does not pile onto our load a bunch of rules that will surely crush the life out of us. As we take those faltering steps toward Jesus, he is at the same time making loping strides to meet us where we are.
In this season I have come to realize just how desperately I need so much more of Jesus with me and in me. And I have seen this in many of you as well. As you have shared your struggles and hurts, as you have become frustrated with how things are operating (or not operating) in our various ministries, as some have become more fearful with temptations to move toward negativity and others becoming more angry at elections, leadership, politics, schools, church, family, friends...we feel like we are coming to the end of our frayed nerves.
“Come to me...and I will give you rest.”
I came up with a saying at the beginning of the pandemic - “Everyone’s doing the best they can, even if it isn’t very good.” I stole part of it from the author Brené Brown. It is an expression of grace. Because when things are hard, it is when we most need to experience grace and most need to express grace. We need more of Jesus.
These last few weeks I don’t think I’ve done a very good job of receiving or giving grace. Others have suffered because of that. But I know the answer is more Jesus. To come to him as he is running to me. It is the answer for you too.
My friends, this will not last forever. I know it is already way, way, way, too long but it isn’t going to be forever.
Hang in there. Lean into Jesus. Find his rest.
This is the kind of people we will be at Cold Springs Church, starting with me and your leaders:
We will be Faith-Full: We will look to the Word of God and Spirit of God to guide us in the decisions we make.
We will be Grace-Full: We will be people who receive the grace of God and share the grace of God with others.
We will be Accept-Full: Our diversity is our strength. We will be a people who are accepting of each other with kindness, respecting each other’s needs and convictions, at times agreeing not to agree but doing it in love.
Your prayers, your financial generosity, your service towards others is shining the light of Jesus in our world, my friends. Please continue to do these things in ever increasing measure. Let’s keep persevering and pressing forward.
Peace and Grace,
David

Dear Family,
We had some great news for our county on September 22nd when we were moved to the Orange Level of COVID-19 precautions. This allows our businesses to operate more normally and also allows churches to have gatherings indoors of 200 people or 50% of the room capacity (whichever is less). I want to update you on the plans for Cold Springs Church as we move back to offering worship services indoors, outdoors on our campus and online.
Worship Gathering Schedule and Options
What’s Happening With KidsWorld Ministry?
Our Children’s Ministry leaders Sylvia Fuller and Charlotte Foster have done a great job of resourcing our families for both home and on-campus worship engagement. On October 18th we will relaunch our KidsWorld ministries during the 10:45am service. The 9AM service will remain a family service where kids and parents are encouraged to worship together. As we have done all along, we will be providing resources to children and parents to help them engage with Jesus during this time.
Elephants In The Room
Let me directly address three elephants I believe are in the room at Cold Springs Church.
Elephant #1 - Face-coverings
Do you have an opinion and conviction about face-coverings? No doubt you do. And so does everyone around you. Some people hold that wearing a face-covering is giving into fear. Others believe not wearing a face covering is being uncaring and insensitive to those around them. And there are nuances of conviction everywhere in between. The other reality is people are feeling judged and attacked by those who have convictions other than their own.
In Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians 8 about a conviction issue (meat that had been sacrificed to idols) there is instruction to take personal responsibility for our choices and to be aware of others and how that affects them. When engaging in public we will be around others with differing opinions and actions. Our unity rests on checking our hearts to be honoring Jesus in how we are loving our neighbor and being considerate of others. As we talked about this in our Leadership Board we all acknowledged that by this point, people have their convictions and they are unlikely to change. We trust you to make decisions that are in line with what is best to protect your health. As there has been since the beginning of our public services, there will be people who have face-coverings and those who do not on campus.
Here is where we come down at Cold Springs Church:
The safest place you can be is in your own home.
We will live with the tension of these different convictions about face coverings, choosing to act in love and grace toward others.
Our three environments offer options to still engage in community but in the way that aligns with your convictions.
The Worship Center and Patio will be face-coverings encouraged, Faith Hall will be face-coverings required.
Elephant #2 - Worship Styles
For the past 23 years I have led with the mindset of “both/and”, not “either/or”. This has made our church broader, deeper and richer by bringing different people together who engage with Jesus in different ways. We have sought to bring people together who value and enjoy worship styles that are different. We will continue doing this by having a video venue Heritage service in Faith Hall at 9AM. It will look and feel different than before because we are in different times. We are in the process of figuring out how to best do this and no doubt it will change. Feedback that is solution oriented is helpful, criticism is not helpful.
Elephant #3 - Disappointment in leadership
Over the past 6 months I and others on the leadership team of Cold Springs Church have received many positive and encouraging messages as we have navigated these confusing, changing and unknown times. We have also received feedback that has let us know we are not meeting people’s expectations or desires.
I know this has made some question whether Cold Springs Church is the place for them. Although this saddens my heart, I do understand the sentiment. I too have been disappointed in my leadership at times. It has been an extraordinary test of leadership and character that I don’t feel I have lived up to all the time. And for that I ask your forgiveness - especially if that has impacted you personally. Although my heart is always that people would stay and discover the fullness of Jesus’ truth and grace through our community, my deeper desire is for each person to be connected into a community of faith where they can best flourish in their faith and serve others. I am so thankful for the faithful witness of the churches in our county. Each has sought to be wise and follow their convictions, do ministry with integrity and meet people’s needs.
If you find yourself needing to leave Cold Springs Church, I truly hope you are going somewhere else. Following Jesus can’t be done alone. As imperfect as this church is, we need each other. Do the hard work of getting connected to community. It is essential for growing a vibrant, resilient faith.
Our focus in this season is engagement. Pursuing a life of faith in Jesus is best done face-to-face, shoulder-to-shoulder and back-to-back. We are working hard to make that happen. We have over 180 people engaged in Life Groups, we are figuring out how to invite into a deeper community the 800+ people who are engaging with us online each week, we are doing mid-week on campus Jr and Sr High ministry, and our other ministries are engaging people in personal ministry. We’re getting there. Keep praying, serving and giving please. We can do this - together. These hardships we are all experiencing are hard and exhausting. But let me remind you, this won't last forever! Keep leaning into Jesus and one another!

Finally, a reminder of the kind of people we will be in these times:
- We will be faith-full. We will look to the Word of God and the Spirit of God to guide us in the decisions we make. Please be assured that those who lead Cold Springs Church have been leaning very hard into prayer over these matters.
- We will be grace-full. We will be people who receive the grace of God and share the grace of God with others. This means we will not be unkind, judgmental or harsh. We will believe of others that they are doing the best they can - even if it doesn’t seem like it is very good.
- We will be accepting. We have a diverse body - age, political ideologies, theological convictions, emotional and spiritual maturity, etc. It is our strength, not a weakness. Some people will wear masks, others won’t. Some people will need to social distance, others will not feel the need. Some people are more fearful, some people are more bold. We will be a church that accepts where others are with kindness and respects their needs and convictions, at times agreeing not to agree but doing it in love.
Peace and grace,
Pastor David
“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”
(Hebrews 10:24–25, NLT)
Dear Cold Springs Family,
I’m so excited for June 28th when we get to worship together face-to-face again! How appropriate that the focus of our message that day will be “Enduring Love” as we celebrate the enduring love of Jesus for us and our enduring love for each other.
We have been prayerfully and carefully planning the launch of our public services to create the safest environment we can for everyone. The situation around COVID-19 continues to change in regards to guidelines and requirements by the State of California but the leadership of Cold Springs Church believes we have the best plan we can devise at this point to create as safe an environment as we can for gathering publicly.
Let me say this up front: The safest place you can be is in your home! If you are at a high risk of contracting the virus or being severely impacted by it, please stay home and join us online. ALSO - IF YOU ARE FEELING SICK FOR ANY REASON, PLEASE STAY HOME. (Yes, I’m shouting at you! But I put my hand over my mouth so it’s OK. I’m serious on this - being cautious is an act of love towards others. Let’s not make it about me, let’s make it about each other.)
Here is what’s happening and how we are going to do our services starting June 28th:
Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your prayers. Thank you for your amazing spiritual, emotional and financial support through these strange and unprecedented times. You are an amazing people and I’m so grateful I get to be part of your lives.
If you have any questions or comments you would like to share, please let me know. I will try and get back to you in a timely manner.
Please continue to pray for me, our leadership, our county, state and nation. And please continue to give generously to help Cold Springs Church continue to live out its mission of “...raising up compassionate followers of Jesus Christ to be risk-takers for God.”
You are deeply loved, appreciated and valued.
Grace and peace,
PS - in my email last month, I said something really important that I want to remind us of. It is the kind of people we will be at Cold Springs Church through these uncertain times:
(Hebrews 10:24–25, NLT)

Here is what’s happening and how we are going to do our services starting June 28th:
- Service times are on Sunday’s at 9:00am and 10:45am. Services will be about 70 minutes long. These are family services where the only thing we will be doing is gathering all kids and adults together outside in the parking lot. We will have resources for kids and parents available to help parents disciple and engage their kids during the services.
- Services will be held outdoors. We will have various seating options for people. We will have a main seating area under a 40’x 60’ tent. We will also have multiple easy-ups around the parking area. We will have enough chairs for everyone.
- FACE MASK POLICY
- The State of CA made face masks mandatory for indoor and outdoor activities as of June 18. The one exception is outdoor activity where distancing of 6’ is maintained.
- I am strongly encouraging you to wear a face mask when you come. If you are resistant to this, I get it. I don’t want to wear a face mask either. But I’m choosing to lay my preference aside so I can serve others and keep them safe. Also, I plan on giving a hug or two and I want to keep other people safe and be kept safe! This is a temporary inconvenience that can have huge positive benefits. Let’s choose to serve each other.
- If you are going to sing out loud during the services, you are required to wear a facemask. Singing, shouting, coughing, sneezing are all proven to have a much greater spread of droplets and aerosol of your breath.
- Facemasks will be made available to those who come as well as hand washing stations, gloves and chair covers (we’re trying to think of everything!). You will be able to have all of the proven best practices available to you on Sundays.
- We will be broadcasting the services through an FM transmitter so you can also participate on-site in your car.
- We will always have our services available online at www.coldspringschurch.net.

Some people will wear masks, others won’t. Some people will need to social distance, others will not feel the need. Some people are more fearful, some people are more bold. We will be a church that accepts where others are with kindness and respects their needs and convictions, at times agreeing not to agree but doing it in love.
Saturday, May 30th
Dear Cold Springs Family,
This is a rather long email, I realize, but it has important information about our future steps as a church. I ask that you would kindly indulge me and take the five minutes to read it.
One of the references I have used to describe these strange times is Bill Murray’s movie “Groundhog Day.” In the movie Bill Murray is a weathercaster assigned to cover Groundhog Day, something he detests. He ends up in a forever loop where every morning he wakes up is still Groundhog Day. He has to learn to live and choose how to live in a situation he didn’t want and greatly dislikes.
Sound familiar?
As I have talked with different people over the past 2+ months of our altered daily reality I have gotten generally three responses: I love it, I hate it, I’m weary of it. And pretty much everyone has been like the kids in the back seat on the way to family vacation asking the same question over and over…”Are we there yet?” Our challenge is “there” is still quite unclear. It is important to know that what will be isn’t what was - the future will look different and everyone is trying to figure it out as we approach it.
We are heading into a new season of what church will look like at Cold Springs as the restrictions are loosened on public gatherings in California. On Monday, May 25th Governor Gavin Newsom released guidelines for faith communities to begin gathering together again in larger groups. If you want to read the whole document, you can find it here.
Here is a quick summary (the guidelines are 13 pages long):
I have met extensively with our ministry team leaders and with the Leadership Board to talk about the best path forward. Our commitment is to create a path that will allow us to meet together and create as safe an environment as we can. Like what is happening nationally and state-wide, we are looking at a phased plan or multi-phase plan that is responsive to the changing situation.
THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT: I am firmly convinced the COVID-19 virus is real and it is significant. Over 100,000 people in the United States have died in the past 4 months related to this virus. The majority of them would still be alive if not for the virus infecting them. I also know El Dorado County has not been greatly impacted medically by the virus and it is harder for us to feel the weight of its impact (although everyone is feeling the social and economic impact). (Find EDC Statistics here)
As your pastor, I am taking this seriously and I am committed to leading in a way that is responsible and sensible. The bottomline is this: the safest place for you to be with regards to the virus is socially isolated at home. And if you are at a higher risk of being infected or at risk of infecting others because you are not well or have knowingly been exposed to the virus, you need to stay home.
COLD SPRINGS CHURCH NEXT STEPS
We are taking a 3 Phase Approach to gathering together as a church.
Please Note: We will ALWAYS have online church available in all phases.
Phase 1: Sunday Public Gatherings at 9:00AM and 10:45AM that are Family Services. There will not be any nursery, children or youth ministries, although we will be providing resources for families to keep their kids engaged during services. Services will be held outdoors in the parking area closest to the buildings. Seating will be under event tents and Easy-ups. We will also broadcast the service through an FM Transmitter so you can listen in your car. People will be able to sit in areas that they most feel comfortable with in regards to social distancing. Projected Start Date: June 21st or 28th.
Phase 2: Continued outdoor services at 9:00AM and 10:45AM. Nursery and Children’s ministry programming will be offered indoors and outdoor patio areas providing the greatest space and ventilation. Projected Start Date: August/September
Phase 3: Services offered indoors with video venue options on patio and Faith Hall. Projected Start Date: October
I know one of the questions some of you are asking is this: “Other churches are already meeting, why are we waiting so long?”
It is a fair question. The short answer is this: we are committed to opening public services at the right time and in the right way. Although we are focusing on keeping things simple, the work to get ready so we can create a healthy, safe and engaging environment requires a significant amount of work. Our ministry team is doing a great job and working very hard at providing a meaningful online worship and spiritual growth experience. We do not need to rush into something we are not ready to do well and to do right. This is a reasonable timeline for us.
My dear friends, I know some of you are thinking “We aren’t moving forward fast enough! Where is our faith?!” And there are others of you who are thinking “What are we doing meeting publicly?! It’s too soon! It’s too risky!” And there are even more of you thinking, “I don’t know...this is confusing.” And I want you to know I have thought and felt each and every one of these things!
The answers are not easy and they are not clear. So this is the kind of people we will be in these times:
One final thing. Things will change. We hold all of our plans loosely knowing that we will be responsive to the changes in our nation, state and county that may require us to take different approaches. Each week as we gather we will evaluate and make adjustments to create the best environment we are able. Please pray for us. Please be patient and kind. If you don’t like something, don’t worry, it will likely change. If you like something, hold it loosely, it will probably change! But always hold onto this: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)
Look for more details in the coming weeks as we get closer to once again gathering together!
You are deeply loved, appreciated and valued.
Grace and peace,
Pastor David

Dear Family,
I wanted to give you an update on how Cold Springs Church is doing and what we are sensing the future is looking like.
These have been trying times for people on so many fronts. Clearly, COVID-19 is a serious and far-reaching health crisis. It is still doing it ravages around the world and continues to be a critical and deadly virus that can be indiscriminate at times. It also continues to be a significant mystery with some promising progress being made in treatment and prevention but those things are still in the future.
On the positive side of things, El Dorado County has largely been spared from experiencing the most devastating impact of the virus itself. We have not experienced any deaths related to the virus (at this point) and we have had a minimal number of diagnosed cases. (Although without widespread testing, it is difficult to measure the true reach of the virus in our county. No doubt there have been many more than have been reported because of no symptoms or mild symptoms.)
But for almost everyone, the social, emotional and financial impact has been significant. We are all experiencing a level of anxiety about the future that is inescapable and understandable. We want to move forward but there is uncertainty about what that looks like and when that will be possible. I have had a number of conversations about the emotional toll this is having. We are made for relationship — especially in our pursuit of following Jesus - and this has greatly disrupted our relationship!
I MISS YOU!
So what’s next?
Although El Dorado County has not extended its shelter-in-place order, the State of California still has that order in place for the whole state. There are efforts underway by particularly more rural counties to have the opportunity to loosen the restrictions and begin moving back to a more “normal” state of affairs. But that has not happened yet.
The leadership of Cold Springs Church is committed to keeping our faith community viable and engaged under whatever circumstances we find ourselves. And we also want to make sure we are doing what we can to keep people as safe as possible. So, although I would love to have us engage in public services as soon as possible, I am also committed to doing it in a very thoughtful, intentional and aware way that honors you and those in authority over us in the government. As we do this there is a blessing for us.
The way things are appearing at this point, I do not expect we would be doing public church services until sometime in June at the very earliest.
We are currently working very hard at creating the plan and gathering the resources to begin public church services that will create both opportunities to worship together in community and do it in a safe and guidelines-honoring way. We will keep you posted when we have updates!
How Can You Be A Support?
Here are some things you can do to be an encouragement:
1. Encourage your leaders. We have an amazing team of people who are working extremely hard to connect with, care for and support us through this time. It has been demanding work emotionally and spiritually to make this sudden pivot to continue helping people engage and grow in their faith. If someone comes to mind, pray for them and reach out to encourage them.
2. Encourage each other. It takes all of us for all us to be loved and cared for. If someone comes to mind, that is the Holy Spirit’s prompting for you to reach out to them and show some love, care and prayer.
3. Pray for each other and our world. Prayer in these times is NOT powerless. We need to be praying for hope and grace in our world. There is actually a significant spiritual awakening that is happening right now. God is not surprised and he is not powerless. Pray for our government leaders, our nation, our state and our county. Pray for our churches. Pray for our partners in ministry around the world. Prayer matters.
4. Engage with Cold Springs Church. “Come to church!” by joining online each week! And it is super easy to invite a friend - just share the website! Our Youth ministry is engaging kids multiple times a week and our children’s ministry is reaching out to kids and parents to help and support them. Engage with them! Also, check our latest connection point - Cold Springs Conversations With Pastor David on Thursdays @ 6:30PM. I’m talking with various people about growing in our faith and living in the overflow of Jesus. Join us on Zoom (where you can participate in asking the panel questions) or Facebook.
5. Give generously. Something really exciting is happening at Cold Springs Church - we are growing! The breadth of our reach is increasing through the online services we are doing! Your generosity keeps us impacting people. We continue to employ all of the ministry team and they are all fully engaged in serving people in the name of Jesus. Please consider giving an extra blessing of financial resources to Cold Springs Church. You can do that here.
Thanks for being awesome, my dear friends. I can’t wait for the chance to see you again and to encourage as many of you as I can face-to-face. In the meantime keep leaning into Jesus and loving each other. You’re going to be OK. We’re going to be OK. God is faithful.
Grace and Peace,
David

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
(1 Peter 5:6–11, ESV)
Dear Family,
I was reflecting on the above passage Tuesday morning with your Cold Springs Ministry Team. I had a college friend who called Peter’s letters to the church “industrial strength scripture” because Peter was writing to a stressed and oppressed church. It’s amazing how God’s Word is timeless.
Peter has a message for us: we can and must trust God in these times.
Trusting God is what I want to remind you to do as well. It is natural to be anxious. It is spiritual to choose to lay those anxieties at the feet of Jesus. It is natural to depend upon our strength and wisdom. It is spiritual to humble ourselves and seek his care and comfort. It is natural for the devil to come in and cause mistrust, misunderstanding and mistakes. It is spiritual to resist him and be firm in love, prayer and care for each other. It is natural to get self-centered and think “Woe is me!” It is spiritual to remember our brothers and sisters around us and around the world suffering even greater travails at this time.
You may have noticed we talk about two words a lot at Cold Springs Church - Restoring, Strengthening. They come from this passage, from God’s promise that sorrow lasts a night but joy comes in the morning. We worship a God who is full of grace and has promised there is something greater, there is something more awaiting us. We will be restored and strengthened. And its going to be a bit painful in the in-between time. Hold on. He is holding on to you.
Thank you to all who engaged with us in our online services. We will continue to offer these on Sunday mornings as well as multiple other engagement points throughout the week through different ministry leaders. It is important that YOU keep reaching out and connecting with people too. We are all in the ministry of connecting and caring for each other. A lot of people need encouragement right now and it will become even more critical in the weeks to come. If someone comes to mind, that is the Holy Spirit’s invitation to you to reach out and let them know they are not forgotten and to pray for them.
This past weekend through the online service on our website and through Facebook we think we had the opportunity to touch about 1,000 people. Our voice is a critical need in our world right now and God is using us to point people to Jesus.
Please do these three things to support Cold Springs Church:
1. Reach out to connect and care for one another.
2. Pray for our ministry team to have discernment and wisdom in equipping us all to walk with Jesus.
3. Partner financially through extraordinary generosity so we can keep sharing the hope of Jesus. You can give online by going here: Give - Cold Springs Church. Ask God what he wants you to give and then trust him by doing it.
I’ve gotten a number encouraging emails and texts from you. Thank you! You are great encouragers. It is a privilege to be your pastor in these days of uncertainty. And still, we can be certain of this... the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish us.
You’re going to be OK. We’re going to be OK. Keep leaning into Jesus, my friends.
Grace and Peace,
David
PS - If you have a need where we can help, let us know. Email or call the church to let us know. We have many people who are ready to serve your needs. You are not alone - we care.

Dearest Cold Springs Family,
Wow. What a week, right? Every day seems to present a new challenge and a new adventure. This is one of those times where we look at the world around us thinking, “That will never happen here…” But then we wake up one morning and say, “Dang - how did that happen here?!”
For me, one of the greatest challenges is how things are “normal/not normal”. Many of us here in the foothills sorta like the idea of “shelter in place!” (I’ve heard from some of you!) But the reality is this is changing our community, nation and world in fundamental ways that we won’t feel the full effects from for a while.
I do want to exhort you (I know that is a strong word but I mean this) to take the precautions seriously. By “flattening the curve” we are choosing to care for the most vulnerable amongst us. Social distance and good hygiene are about loving your neighbor right now. I am convinced this is more serious than I originally thought it was and it is imperative we all help in slowing the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Medical experts I have been in conversation with believe the next 2-3 weeks are critical in determining the breadth and depth of its impact.
In the meantime, here are the two most important things we at Cold Springs Church are focused on: Connection and Care. I have one focus for me and our ministry team leaders, that every person is connected with, loved and cared for.
I have asked each of our ministry leaders to create two connection points each week for the people they shepherd. You should be hearing from them in some form to check on you to see that you are doing OK physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. If you haven’t been reached out to or you know someone who hasn’t, would you please let me know? You can email me (david@coldspringschurch.net) with that information and we will make sure you are connected.
Also remember this: Connection and Care is something we all must do for one another and our neighbors. This is how the people of Jesus have shown the power of Jesus throughout history. We are the ones who love and care for each other and the world. It is our core value of "Compassion with action."
Here’s what I’m asking you to do: Connect with 2 to 4 people each day in some way to let them know you are thinking of them and to see if they are OK. This is our chance to BE JESUS IN THE WORLD. Let’s keep it simple.
In our devotion this morning, Pam and I read Psalm 116. It was a good reminder of God’s faithfulness and love in these times.
Psalm 116 (NLT)
1 I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. 2 Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!
3 Death wrapped its ropes around me; the terrors of the grave overtook me. I saw only trouble and sorrow. 4 Then I called on the name of the Lord: “Please, Lord, save me!”
5 How kind the Lord is! How good he is! So merciful, this God of ours! 6 The Lord protects those of childlike faith; I was facing death, and he saved me. 7 Let my soul be at rest again, for the Lord has been good to me. 8 He has saved me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. 9 And so I walk in the Lord’s presence as I live here on earth!
Finally - remember to connect with us Sunday morning at 9:15am for worship and teaching. You can do this on the Cold Springs Church Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/coldspringschurch/ or through our website - www.coldspringschurch.net. I look forward to your virtual interaction online!
I also know that “shelter in place” won’t last forever. One day - albeit weeks from now - we will once again come together in our neighborhoods, restaurants, businesses, schools and churches. You’re going to be OK. We’re going to be OK. Let’s keep leaning into Jesus, together.
You are loved deeply by me and the great team at Cold Springs Church.
Peace and Grace,

"Social distancing is good to control a pandemic
but social isolation is bad for our soul." - Pastor David
Dear Family,
The world is changing every day and it can be hard to keep up with all that is happening and still maintain your sanity. I want to encourage you this is a time to lean into Jesus. If you haven’t heard or seen my message from Sunday, I want to encourage you to listen to it (Ordinary Faith in Extraordinary Times -http://www.coldspringschurch.net/sermons.html). I know it will encourage you in these uncertain times we find ourselves in.
We are prepared to adjust to this new reality and are working hard to make sure our Cold Springs Church family stays connected, encouraged and equipped to have a thriving faith now and in the future. It is a very fluid situation that is likely to last into May. As for now, this past Sunday was the last Sunday we will be holding public services for the foreseeable future.
Over the coming days you will be hearing from our various ministry leaders who will be providing you ways to stay connected and be prepared to have conversations with your family and friends about faith in Jesus.
Every Sunday morning at 9:15am we will be sharing an online service that will include worship and teaching. We will be continuing our series “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made.” Notes and other resources will be available on our website (www.coldspringschurch.net).
On an ongoing basis, I will be sharing some additional resources we are working on to encourage and strengthen you so keep watching for my emails.
A few more things:
- The reports from healthcare professionals is they are expecting a surge in cases of COVID-19 in the coming two weeks. It is especially important for our seniors to take this seriously and take the precautions that will keep you healthy. If you need help with anything, we have a long list of people who would love to shop, deliver food, pick up necessities, etc. Call or email the office and let us know. Please, if you are in the higher risk categories for this virus - STAY HOME!
- We will be regularly monitoring phone messages and emails throughout the week but we are reducing our office hours to Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00am to 2:00pm. If you leave a message, we will get back to you ASAP.
- If you would like to partner with Cold Springs Church to bring the hope of Jesus to our community during this time, you can do that by giving online through our website http://www.coldspringschurch.net/give.html or you can mail donations to 2600 Cold Springs Rd. Placerville, CA 95667. Thank you for continuing to be generous to the mission of Jesus in the world. More than ever we need your support and I am extremely grateful for your generosity. I know it is an act of faith, love and sacrifice. I am deeply grateful.
- Here is a simple way for you to help bring light to our fearful world: reach out and connect with someone. How you can connect: smoke signals - bad ; email - good; text someone - very good; call/video chat with someone - best.
Here’s my challenge to you: introverts - connect with 2 people each day; extroverts - connect with 4 people each day; extreme extroverts - no limits.
Seriously - intentionally ask God who to contact, listen to the Holy Spirit, reach out and connect in some way with the intent of listening, encouraging and praying for them - every day.
Lastly, could you please keep me in prayer as well? I'm joining county task forces to help deal with the crisis in our county. We have many leaders in our county and city government who are devoted followers of Jesus. They need our prayers and support to be strengthened and given wisdom that is greater than them. Also, please pray for those in law enforcement and emergency services. As people get stressed, they are on the frontlines to meet the needs and protect us. Pray God protects them.
It is a joy to be your pastor. Thank you for being part of the Cold Springs Church family. I am thankful for you.
You’re going to be OK. We’re going to be OK. Jesus has us in his hands.
Grace and Peace,
David

Dear Family,
Just wanted to send you a quick note to keep you updated about what is happening in our community. We are still planning on holding regular services this Sunday March 15th.
However, I expect that we will be changing things at the beginning of this week. It seems quite inevitable that in the very near future schools in our community will be required to close to help in limiting the potential spread of the COVID-19 virus. There are still zero confirmed cases of the virus in our county but it is just a matter of time until cases show up because of our strong connections to the Sacramento and Bay areas.
No matter what happens, please be assured that Cold Springs Church will continue to creatively work to care for, connect with and provide support to you and our community. We are here for you!
In these times, here are the things I am asking you to do:
1. Pray for our nation and each other. Pray for a quick end to this crisis and wisdom for those in authority who are making the decisions that are affecting our lives.
2. Care for each other. If God brings someone to your mind, that is the Holy Spirit’s invitation to reach out to them and check on them. We are to create social distance as a precaution but we need each other! So take the extra effort to show love and concern for others.
3. Share hope with others. As followers of Jesus we know we aren’t alone and we are not without a greater hope. We don’t need to be people who are captive to fear. God will hold us and sustain us no matter what we go through. And we can share that hope with the people around us!
Just a couple of reminders for you:
- If you are someone who is considered a higher risk to contracting and being impacted by the virus, please be extra cautious. That means you should avoid crowds and situations where you might come into contact with a carrier of the virus. I want you to come to church! But not now! Let things settle down and be safe. We aren’t going anywhere and will be here for you.
- Please continue to support Cold Springs Church with your prayers, encouragement and your giving. We need wisdom and the power of God at work through us. And we need your faithful financial support to meet the needs of our community for God’s glory and the growth of his Kingdom. It is easy to give online by going to our website - http://coldspringschurch.churchcenter.com
These are extraordinary times, for sure. But we will do more than survive, we will thrive. Thanks for being part of God’s hope in fearful times. You’re going to be OK. We’re going to be OK.
Peace and Grace,
David

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7, ESV)
Dear Cold Springs Family,
With the conflicting, daily news about the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in recent weeks, it is challenging to know how best to respond to alerts of a viral pandemic. That said, as I write this, there have been no reported cases within El Dorado County and we are not canceling any of our ministry gatherings.
What Is Being Asked Of Us
The Governor of California has put forth the request and recommendation to not have gatherings of larger than 250 people throughout the state. None of our individual services are larger than 250 people so this does not affect our services and programming.
What We Are Doing
As your pastor, I want to let you know how the leadership of Cold Springs is responding to provide an environment of wellness. We are taking measures to keep people safe at our gatherings, including:
If things change, we will let you know through email, social media, texting and personal communications as necessary.
What You Need To Do
We encourage you to follow the below advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
For a full list of CDC recommendations visit:https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/prevention-treatment.html.
How You Can Stay Connected
Cold Springs Church is about growing our relationships as we grow as disciples of Jesus! The idea of not meeting can be challenging. But we are continuing to offer our services to view over the internet if you are unable to attend or don’t feel comfortable doing so. You can do this by going to our website to get information about our live-streamed services at: coldspringschurch.net.
Our Life Groups are a critical part of our connection with one another. As long as you are healthy, we encourage you to continue meeting with each other to pray, grow and encourage each other.
Faithful, Not Fearful
Finally, we should be cautious but we should not be fearful. We will do the best we can to care for each other and we also trust in the greater love and mercy of God. This is a great opportunity for the church to step up in love, truth and compassion. It is a great time to share with our friends and neighbors our confidence in the goodness of Jesus and our eternal hope that knows this is not all there is. Pray for our world and for our church in these uncertain times that people will see the power of God at work and turn in faith toward Jesus.
“Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9, ESV)
Peace and Grace,
